So day 2 - gifts lets talk about gifts. So regarding gifts and giving what are people's criteria around giving gifts? I mean some of us believe in giving because we create list, we go through the list and we go ahead and we buy based on that.
Or is there more to it?
Or is there more to it?
What is your criteria around it? Who is it that you buy for? How do work that out? How much is it is a good amount to spend? Do you buy the go to gifts like the Favourites chocolates or the Walker Shortbread Biscuits?
Drilling down on who you are buying for – are you buying for people you believe you should be giving to because they gave you something last year or they are in your family because you kind of got to? Are you buying gifts because you drew the name out of a hat? Are you buying the gift because it is expected that you will do so?
I curious around the reasoning around why you are buying of the gift and whether it's based on expectations that you believe are there from others or your own self-imposed expectations. Is this bound up in some sort of obligation or keeping up making sure that you're giving just as much as other people are.
Something I want to put out there and I’m wondering if it is something that would work for yourselves … what if you were to create a personalised criteria so the criteria was independent of what you been doing up until now and based on what matters to you.
For example, was is a gift to you? Identify what it is that gift is. Is it just something you just buy and it is something physical? Is it something that is bound up in emotion and it's a it's an expression of love or care or I was thinking of you? So when you're giving a gift what is it that you're trying to communicate? I think if we're not aware of what the gift is all about in the first place then when we give it we don't know for what reason we're giving it or weather we are communicating what we want to communicate or it's just quite an automatic reaction?
I think also in regards to this - who is the gift for and therefore what is the gift? There will be some gifts that will be highly appropriate than there’ll be other ones which just won’t fit. It won't be the right thing because of the relationship that you have with that person.
What I'm putting out there is - do you do the default, do you do the default of what you think the expectations are of “I've got to buy gifts for all these people and this is how much money I could spend it on and if I don't know I'm going to spend hours looking for a gift that I don't know what I'm going to buy for and hey I better go over-the-top rather than undercooked, in regards to how much I spend, and look worst-case scenario I can always buy the Walkers Shortbreads or even the Favourites chocolates”.
So anyway these are just some ideas of what I want to put out there in regards to when you are buying the gifts - what do you do and is that working for you? Does that give you a sense of I'm giving? Is it communicating something and you know exactly what it is communicating? How about buying the right gift for the right person - am I'm buying for who I want to or am I just buying it because I believe should?
So anyway some things to think about some things to think about when buying gift leading up to Christmas.
